Back to School Room MakeoverBy: Nicole
With the start of the next school year approaching soon, there’s no better time to get your room organized and beautified! Make your bedroom serve its purpose as storage for your prized possessions and a cozy oasis. Before you get overwhelmed, take a look at this article for tips and tricks for freshening up your room so it looks its best.
The list below has been compiled to inspire you while you transform your room. Most items can be personalized any way you like to suit your style and personality, and are neutral so the main focus of your room is the things that make you happy. Before you start your room makeover, consult this list and maybe even make your own list of things you would like for your room. Many of the items in this article can be altered to fit your style and preferences, as these are just suggestions!
Sheets and Bedding
Since the bed is usually the focal point of a room, it is important that it represents your aesthetic and captures the essence of your style. Sheets in a neutral color such as white or gray are recommended, since they match anything and will never go out of style. White bedding (pillows, comforter, quilt) can lighten up a room and make it feel more open and airy, and acts as a blank canvas to the possessions and decorations in the room. Patterned or colorful bedding serves as the focal point in an otherwise neutral colored room.
Suggested places for sheets and bedding: Urban Outfitters, Ikea, Target.
A full-length mirror comes in handy on early school mornings and allow for more convenient dressing. Styling an outfit is tremendously easier when in front of a mirror. Mirrors, when strategically placed, can give a room the appearance of being bigger or more spacious. Stand-up mirrors look best in a corner, while over-the-door mirrors can be hung from a closet door to save space.
Suggested places for mirrors: Ikea, Target, Wayfair.com.
Storage is a necessity in any bedroom, and it is crucial to have as much of it as possible to accommodate personal belongings. As stated earlier, neutral colors are recommended for furniture to accentuate decorations and possessions. Ample styles are available for furniture, including wood, clear plastic, glass, and more. Dressers are essential for keeping clothing neat and organized. Choose one with a lot of drawers. Night tables are very necessary to hold a clock, glass of water, book, lamp, phone and other things one might need before bed or when they wake up. Put one on either side of the bed, or place one on the side of the bed for easy access.
Vanities and Wardrobes
They are not necessary for a bedroom, but are ideal for extra storage if space allows for them. Ikea has gorgeous wardrobes to hang up and/or display your favorite clothes. Investing in a clothing rack allows staple clothing pieces to be displayed and really add a personal touch to a bedroom. Plus, they allow easy access in a hurry.
Suggested places for storage: Ikea, Target, Pottery Barn
Desk & Chair
A quiet place to focus is a key element to having the ideal room. Whether it be studying, drawing, writing, blogging or doing homework, everyone needs a tranquil work space. Desks and chairs to go with them look great in neutral tones such as white, black, and wood. Clear plastic or glass desks are also a unique option. Make sure to invest in a desk that provides enough space for belongings, and a chair that is comfortable. A cute fuzzy pillow would be a change of texture on top of a wooden chair!
Suggested places for desks and chairs: Ikea, Target, Pottery Barn.
Proper lighting is an essential element in a bedroom. It is important to have a mixture of natural light and artificial lights (such as lamps) to provide the appropriate amount of light at any time of the day. Ideally, there should be a lamp on the desk (to provide ample light while working), on the night tables (to find a glass of water or check the clock at night), and a lamp or two in corners of the room to provide extra light, if necessary.
Suggested places for lights: Ikea, Target, Home Depot, Pottery Barn, Lowes.
A few spare seats are a thoughtful option that gives friends and guests a place to relax while hanging out in your room. They also make a great cozy place to curl up with a book or talk on the phone. Many options of seating are available, so the possibilities are endless! Beanbag chairs, love seats, hanging chairs, armchairs, lounge chairs and ottomans are just a few examples.
Suggested places for extra seating: Ikea, Pottery Barn, Target.
Plants can make any room instantly feel more natural, inviting and beautiful! From miniature trees to potted flowers to tiny succulents and everything in between, let nature add an organic accent to your room!
Suggested places for organic elements: local nurseries, Home Depot, Ikea, Lowes.
A neutral colored room is the p-e-r-f-e-c-t blank canvas to add personal accents and make a room one of a kind. Furry rugs, patterned carpets, or tapestry rugs look great against a hard floor such as wood or tile. To spice up walls, invest in a pretty painting or two, or create your own! A clothesline strung across a wall provides a creative way to display your favorite memories or your favorite photos from tumblr. Try making a collage of your favorite photos and magazine clippings to frame and hang on the wall as well.
For the avid note-taker or the social butterfly, a space dedicated to keeping notes or plans is a must. Hang a bulletin and/or dry-erase board above your desk to keep track of your schedule. A calendar also makes for a handy tool to write down dates and times. Not into dry-erase boards? Many craft stores and home improvement stores sell chalkboard paint, which is painted onto any hard surface to create a chalkboard that can be written on!
Another simple way to add a personal touch to a bedroom is to display a stack of magazines: create a pile of your favorite magazines with thick spines (i.e. Vogue, Teen Vogue, InStyle, Russh, etc.) and place it on the corner of a dresser or desk, on the floor, under a night table, or anywhere else. It can also double as a cute place to display small decorations in your room.
A popular trend right now is Mason jars. Try using a few on a desk or a side table and filling them up with small treasures such as seashells, glitter, candies, mints, flowers, movie tickets, and more. Mason jars also make perfect storage for desk necessities such as pencils, paper clips, and scraps of paper to write notes on! Still not sure what to do with those extra Mason jars lying around? Search “Mason jar” on Pinterest for some DIY ideas!
Decorations & Knick Knacks
They add a quirky element to a room. Check out a thrift shop for interesting antiques and unique pieces of pottery, porcelain, and glass. Urban Outfitters has a wide variety of fascinating decorations and accessories to appeal to any taste. For hand-made unique decorations, shop on Etsy. Who knows what you will find?!
Suggested places for personal accents: Etsy, Ikea, Goodwill, Urban Outfitters, Target, Pottery Barn, and your own home!
Don’t shy away from displaying your own personal belongings as decorations either! A few pretty perfume bottles or nail polishes can add a stylish feel to your room. Picture frames with your favorite pictures or memories in them can brighten up your room and your mood as well!
